Building a Strong Foundation Through Eye Exams
Your child’s vision shapes how they learn, grow, and explore the world. At North Shore Eye Health & Wellness, we believe that healthy eyes are the foundation for success in the classroom, on the playground, and beyond.
Regular eye exams can help detect issues like eye turns, lazy eye, or focusing problems early, when treatment is most effective.
Whether your child is an infant, preschooler, or teenager, our team provides personalized care to support their unique visual needs. We also proudly participate in the InfantSEE program, offering a no-cost exam for babies 6–12 months of age.
Start building good eye care habits early with your children. Contact us to schedule their next eye exam today.
Why Annual Eye Exams Are Important for Children
Children’s eyes grow and change quickly. Even if your child seems to see well, vision problems are not always obvious. Routine eye exams can help detect issues early, when they are most treatable.
Yearly exams allow us to:
- Monitor eye health and development
- Detect refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism
- Identify conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (eye turns)
- Support your child’s learning and social development
The American Optometric Association recommends that a child have their first comprehensive eye exam between 6–12 months of age. From there, exams should be scheduled at 2–3 years of age, 5–6 years of age, and annually while in school.

Common Pediatric Eye Conditions We Manage
Our clinic diagnoses and treats a wide range of childhood eye conditions, including:
- Amblyopia (Lazy Eye): Reduced vision in one eye caused by a poor connection between the eye and the brain.
- Strabismus (Eye Turns): Misalignment of the eyes that can affect depth perception and lead to amblyopia.
- Refractive Errors: Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, which may require glasses or contact lenses.
- Myopia (Nearsightedness): A growing concern in children, myopia can worsen quickly without treatment.
- Oculomotor Dysfunction: Difficulty controlling eye movements, which can impact reading, tracking, and focus.
- Convergence Insufficiency: A condition where the eyes struggle to work together at close distances, causing double vision or eye strain.
- Other Binocular Vision Disorders: Conditions affecting how the eyes coordinate and work together, which can influence visual comfort and learning.
The Link Between Vision and Learning
Clear, comfortable vision is essential for success in school and daily life. Many vision problems can mimic learning or attention issues. Children who struggle with reading, writing, or focusing may actually be dealing with an undiagnosed vision problem.
A pediatric eye exam can uncover whether vision is interfering with your child’s development, helping them reach their full potential.
Myopia Management
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is becoming increasingly common among children. Left unmanaged, it can progress rapidly and increase the risk of serious eye conditions later in life.
North Shore Eye Health and Wellness is proud to specialize in myopia management, providing options to patients that help slow down the progression of adolescent myopia.
Vision Therapy for Kids
Vision therapy is a customized, exercise-based treatment program that helps strengthen how the eyes and brain work together.
It can be especially effective for children who experience:
- Struggles with reading or focusing
- Double vision or headaches during schoolwork
- Eye coordination issues, such as strabismus or convergence insufficiency
Our team provides vision therapy programs designed for kids and supports children with vision-related learning disabilities.
We Also Have Eyewear and Contact Lenses for Kids
We offer durable, comfortable eyewear designed for kids of all ages. For older children and teens, we also provide safe and effective contact lens fittings. Our team will help determine the best solution for your child’s lifestyle and comfort.
Our children’s exams are designed to be comfortable, interactive, and tailored to their developmental stage. We use child-friendly techniques and tools to assess vision without relying on adult-style eye charts alone.
Schedule your child’s next eye exam today and discover how our pediatric-focused team can support their healthy development.

What Patients Are Saying
My daughter came in with complaints of cloudy vision. Every person we encountered was friendly and professional. I could tell my daughter was comfortable during every test throughout her visit. Dr. assured both of us that her complaint was nothing to worry about!
Relieved and happy with our experience here!

As a new patient, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect.
My previous experiences had been with large chain eye centers and those experiences were hit or miss. I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at North Shore Eye. They were friendly and thorough with their examinations and Dr. Ross was extremely
knowledgeable and friendly. I would highly recommend!
Amy S.

responses and overall very friendly environment.

The most up to date equipment with the most personal care from any optometrist I’ve ever gotten. I would recommend him to anybody who has a complex prescription and hasn’t had good luck with other doctors.
Geoff R.
Dr. Ross and staff were very helpful. When I had a terrible eye infection, Dr. Ross evaluated my eye, prescribed me the proper meds, and scheduled a follow-up to make sure everything was going as expected. Overall, I was very impressed with the level of care and would recommend North Shore to anyone who needs to see an optometrist.
