What Is Dry Eye?
Dry eye occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears are of poor quality to keep the eyes properly lubricated. This can lead to irritation, inflammation, blurred or fluctuating vision, and increased sensitivity to light. Dry eye can also cause discomfort with contact lens wear or make your eyes feel gritty or tired.
Often, dry eye is linked to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), where the glands along the eyelids that produce oils for your tear film become blocked or insufficient.

What Causes Dry Eye?
Dry eye can be influenced by multiple factors, often working together:
- Aging: Tear production naturally decreases over time
- Environmental conditions: Dry air, wind, and air conditioning can worsen symptoms
- Digital eye strain: Prolonged screen use reduces blinking
- Contact lens wear: Extended wear can destabilize the tear film
- Medications: Antihistamines, antidepressants, and birth control can reduce tear production
- Autoimmune disorders: Conditions like Sjögren’s syndrome affect the tear glands
How We Diagnose Dry Eye
Our Dry Eye Center uses different diagnostic methods to determine the cause and severity of your symptoms, which is crucial for effective treatment. Our diagnostic tools include:
- Tear Film Analysis: Evaluates all three 3 layers of your tear film to identify deficiencies.
- Automated and Subjective Tear Break-Up Time (TBUT): Measures how quickly tears evaporate.
- Dyes and Staining: Detects areas of ocular surface damage.
- Meibography: Images the meibomian glands to assess function and blockage.
- Schirmer’s Test: Measures tear production.
- Ocular Surface and Eyelid Assessment: Checks for inflammation, infection, and eyelid gland health.
These tests allow us to create a personalized treatment plan for each patient.
Our Dry Eye Treatments
At North Shore Eye Health & Wellness, we treat dry eye by addressing the cause, not just the symptoms. Every treatment plan is personalized to match your comfort level, lifestyle, and the severity of your condition.
From gentle in-office exfoliation to advanced light-based therapies, our goal is to restore balance, comfort, and long-term eye health.
BlephEx is a gentle in-office cleaning that removes debris, excess oils, and bacteria from the eyelid margins. By clearing away buildup and Demodex mites, it helps improve comfort and reduce inflammation around the lashes.
Best for: Mild to moderate dry eye and eyelid irritation
LipiFlow combines heat and gentle pressure to open blocked meibomian glands, restoring the natural oil layer that keeps tears healthy. A single 12-minute session can be equivalent to years of at-home warm compresses.
Best for: Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and chronic evaporative dry eye
Also known as cold laser therapy, LLLT uses soothing light energy to support cellular repair, reduce inflammation, and relieve discomfort. Treatments are completed in a short series of sessions for lasting improvement.
Best for: Inflammation-driven dry eye and mild gland blockage
Our iProX system combines Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Radiofrequency (RF) technology to target the deeper causes of dry eye. IPL calms inflammation and abnormal vessels, while RF gently heats and massages the glands to clear blockages.
Best for: Moderate to severe dry eye, rosacea-related inflammation, and eyelid rejuvenation
For patients seeking comprehensive results, combination therapy pairs iProX with InfinityPro LLLT or LipiFlow to target multiple layers of dry eye disease. These synergistic treatments relieve symptoms, promote gland health, and improve eyelid tone and comfort.
Best for: Complex or persistent dry eye that has not responded to single treatments

What Patients
Are Saying
My daughter came in with complaints of cloudy vision. Every person we encountered was friendly and professional. I could tell my daughter was comfortable during every test throughout her visit. Dr. assured both of us that her complaint was nothing to worry about!
Relieved and happy with our experience here!

As a new patient, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect.
My previous experiences had been with large chain eye centers and those experiences were hit or miss. I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at North Shore Eye. They were friendly and thorough with their examinations and Dr. Ross was extremely
knowledgeable and friendly. I would highly recommend!

The most up to date equipment with the most personal care from any optometrist I’ve ever gotten. I would recommend him to anybody who has a complex prescription and hasn’t had good luck with other doctors.
Geoff R.
Dr. Ross and staff were very helpful. When I had a terrible eye infection, Dr. Ross evaluated my eye, prescribed me the proper meds, and scheduled a follow-up to make sure everything was going as expected. Overall, I was very impressed with the level of care and would recommend North Shore to anyone who needs to see an optometrist.
